Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, can be caused by genetics, certain medications, significant weight fluctuations, or other unidentified factors. It occurs when there is an excess of fat or glandular tissue in the breasts, resulting in a round, saggy appearance and downward-pointing nipples. Many men experience some degree of breast enlargement, which can impact their appearance and make it difficult to achieve a toned chest even with exercise.
Male breast reduction surgery at our Istanbul clinic is the most effective way to correct breast enlargement. The procedure involves removing excess fat and glandular tissue and, in some cases, skin to achieve a more masculine chest contour.
How is male breast reduction done ?
There are two ways to correct gynecomastia depending on the degree of breast enlargement.
-
Liposuction procedure :
Liposuction for breast reduction can be performed using local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. The surgeon will make small incisions along the sides of the breast and insert a thin tube called a cannula. The cannula is used to loosen and remove excess fat tissue. While liposuction is effective in treating excess fat tissue, in some cases it may be necessary to remove glandular tissue as well to achieve the desired results.

Male breast reduction with tissues excision :
For more severe cases of gynecomastia, the surgeon may need to remove glandular tissue and excess sagging skin in addition to excess fat. This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon will make incisions around the areolas or in the natural creases of the breast and remove the excess tissue and skin. The areolas may be repositioned to achieve a more natural male breast appearance. This procedure is more involved than liposuction and may require a longer recovery period.
Recovery after male breast reduction
After surgery, the chest will be wrapped in gauze for a few days. It is normal to experience soreness, swelling, and bruising after any surgical procedure. The patient will be given a special compression garment to help reduce swelling and support the tissues as they heal.
It is important for the patient to get plenty of rest and avoid activities that may strain the chest muscles. Most people can return to work after a week if their job does not involve physical activity, but more vigorous activities should be avoided for at least three weeks.
While the results of breast reduction surgery are immediately visible, it may take several weeks to months for the final results to become apparent.
